Yvonne Cates, H.T.

Research Coordinator

Yvonne Cates serves San Diego Zoo Global as a Research Coordinator in Disease Investigations. In this role, she oversees the Histology Laboratory, which processes tissue samples to produce diagnostic microscopic slides. The information obtained supports the management of San Diego Zoo Global's animal collections and field conservation programs, while adding to research information contained in our museum-accredited Pathology Archive.

Yvonne joined San Diego Zoo Global with 25 years of experience. Her professional interests focus on optimizing the processing, sectioning, routine and special staining, and immunohistochemistry testing of a wide variety of animal tissues.

Yvonne attended San Diego Mesa College and San Diego State University. While working toward a bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, she completed a clinical lab internship at a local hospital that introduced her to the art and science of histology, which she has passionately pursued ever since. Her professional certifications include Histotechnician Qualification in Immunohistochemistry from the American Society for Clinical Pathology. She is a member of the California Society for Histotechnology and National Society for Histotechnology. Yvonne is a San Diego native with a love of art, science, animals, and conservation.
