Shannon Torgerson, J.D.

Associate General Counsel

Shannon Torgerson serves San Diego Zoo Global as the Associate General Counsel in Legal Services and Risk Management. As the primary legal contact for staff at the Institute for Conservation Research, she works on matters supporting the funding, staffing, and management of conservation research projects in over 35 countries.

Shannon drafts and negotiates agreements for transactions, financing, partnerships, operations, labor, vendor services, and intellectual property, as well as developing and implementing compliance policies and programs. She participates in proceedings before state and federal regulatory agencies, including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and U.S. Department of Agriculture. She also serves as vice-chair of San Diego Zoo Global’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.

Shannon has a bachelor’s degree from Boston University, a master’s degree from the University of Southern California, and a juris doctor degree from Northwestern University’s School of Law. She was a legal intern for the Environmental Protection Agency, Federal Trade Commission, and Federal Communications Commission, and she worked as a volunteer keeper aid at Smithsonian’s National Zoo. Prior to joining San Diego Zoo Gloal, Shannon spent eight years as an energy and environmental lawyer at international law firms. She is admitted to the state bars of California, New York, Massachusetts, and the District of Columbia. During her free time, she enjoys spending time on her ranch with her horse, sheep, goats, and pigs.
