Arely was born and raised in the city of Puebla in Mexico. She obtained her MVZ (DVM equivalent) degree from the Benemerita Universidad Autonoma de Puebla and worked at the pathology department of Africam Safari, a private zoo in Puebla, for five years. She then moved to Storrs, where she completed a combined Master of Science and Residency in veterinary anatomic pathology Program at the University of Connecticut Department of Pathobiology and Veterinary Science, and the AAVLD-certified Connecticut Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory, where she gained significant experience in diagnostic pathology of domestic and aquatic species. Arely became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists while working as a Pathology Fellow in the Wildlife Conservation Society in New York (Zoological Health Program, Bronx Zoo). She also returned to the University of Connecticut for a temporary Clinical Assistant Professor position where she predominantly worked as a diagnostic pathologist for non-domestic species. Before joining SDZWA, Arely spent about a year as a Postdoctoral Associate in the Aquatic, Amphibian, and Reptile Pathology Service at the University of Florida Department of Comparative, Diagnostic and Population Medicine, College of Veterinary Medicine, where she split her time between diagnostics and research.

Arely’s main interests include diagnostic pathology of wildlife, predominantly non-mammalian and aquatic species, and infectious diseases in those species.
