Jamie Adkins serves San Diego Zoo Global as a Research Associate in Disease Investigations. In this role, her research is focused primarily on desert tortoises housed at the Desert Tortoise Conservation Center outside Las Vegas, Nevada. Desert tortoises are susceptible to upper respiratory tract infections and have been shown to develop pneumonia and enteritis. Jamie utilizes molecular methods, including DNA extraction as well as conventional and real time PCR, to determine possible infectious causes.
Jamie earned her bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology with highest honors from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, with a minor in Chemistry. She has always been passionate about nature, and a course in sustainable development lead her to pursue a career that focused on improving the way that we interact with our environment to ensure that ecosystems can thrive. In her free time, Jamie enjoys hiking and camping.
